Choosing Canadian College Cities & Communities

Following over 6 months of extensive research of colleges across Canada after countless emails, website visits, mailing requests and much more my final selection of colleges across the country have been chosen that I will be applying for over the course of the next couple weeks. As my future aspirations following school are quickly dawning and I enjoy The Bronte Creek Project outdoor leadership program & COOP and take my English and Math courses I am applying somewhere where I will spend many weeks outside Ontario forming connections and ties. Preparing myself for what I hope to be a bright and sunny future whether peering out my kitchen window, peering out my galley window at 39,000 feet flying to Cardiff or a tour bus rumbling along the countryside of China.

The following Canadian cities are where I am applying for 1 & 2 year Hospitality and/or international travel tourism programs. Each of these cities offer something different, some tucked in the mountains, some along the Atlantic, some in the middle of the flatlands along rivers or a quaint sea town in East Coast Canada. Each offers something different though right now I am thinking my top choice is SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary, Alberta out west.
Those that made it through my initial list of over 20 colleges in most of Canada's 10 provinces made it through the selection process due to their incredible programs which for myself was most important was:
- A solid extensive hospitality/international travel tourism program
- Creative informative courses
- Accomodations & assistance
- Solid area for tourism & hospitality for the 1-2 months of annual COOP placements that must be taken as part of the program
- Options for study abroad

West Edmonton Mall's swirling roller coaster

The array of attractions at the globe's biggest mall

Edmonton, Alberta
Edmonton in northern Alberta along the Saskatchewan River, part of western Canada in a gradually growing city of 995,000. Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta, a powerful gouvernment in the financial industry with Calgary especially and Edmonton especially with the oil, methanol and grain industries. Edmonton forms the major centre for the Canadian oil industry that has contributed to the great wealth out there that many Albertans have attained over the years. Liquid gold is spread across the province of Alberta and in praticular abundance closer to Edmonton. The city is a bustling place with many American and foreign tourists flocking to experience Edmonton and its most popular feature; West Edmonton Mall. The largest mall on earth featuring over 800 stores, 110 restaurants and a multitude of features including an indoor beach, roller coasters, submarines and much more across 48 city blocks. Six hours west of the city lies a major Candian tourism and skiing area; Jasper. A enticing area for COOP placements in the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Edmonton has the NHL team Edmonton Oilers which Canadian Wayne Gretzky of Brantford, Ontario played on, large tourism industry and wide array of the arts. I have family living here which I have not seen much of over the years due to them remaining out west for much of their life, to be able to see them all the time would be wonderful.

This college has a great all inclusive hands-on general hospitality degree incorporating the many facets of the hospitality industry. It is a highly technologically advanced college with student led facilities including extensive computer labs, reservation labs high caliber facilties. An all round great place to live and learn. I am applying here for their 2 year Hospitality Management program.

Grant Macewan College

I am applying here for a condensed consecutive 13 month Travel program here which covers the many areas of domestic, transborder (travel to the USA), and ever increasing interntional travel in a modern, lively college with many new or newly refurbished buildings including a spectacular new residence.

An aerial view of Red Deer,Alberta

Red Deer, Alberta
Red Deer, Alberta is a smaller city of 76,000 between Edmonton 90 minutes to the north and Calgary 90 minutes to the south Red Deer is in a perfect geographical location. Located in the middle of oil, grain and petrol production Red Deer serves an important role. It has a wide variety of restaurants, theatres as well as a university in addition to the college. Red Deer in addition to being close to Calgary and the skiing tourism cities of Alberta, it offers its own skiing hotels and resorts along its ski hills which many visit. Red Deer offers a bunch of beautiful museums, art galleries, pristine parklands and hiking trails and is a great gateway to Alberta and western Canada. Canadian sports announcer Ron Mc Lean featured often alongside Don Cherry was born here and now lives in my city Oakville, Ontario. How crazy would it be to follow him around? I have met him on a number of ocassions. When booking flights to and from Toronto I could fly into either Edmonton or Calgary which is a rare plus for out of province students.

Red Deer Community College
This college offers a all inclusive pacakge of the tourism and hospitality world with a extensive program in a wonderful smaller college with a very friendly and accomadating staff and professor team. I am applying to their 2 year Hospitality and Tourism Management program.

Lovely Lake Louise (2 hours outside Calgary)

Calgary, Alberta
Calgary is a major business and tourism centre for Canada, with over 956,000 people it's a rapidly growing city with a increase of over 15% between 1996-2001 with 22,400 additional people living in Calgary in 2005 over 2004. Calgary is set in the foothills of the Rockie moutains which provide a stunning backdrop to the many tall office buildings and signature building from the 1988 Olympic Games Calgary hosted the Calgary Tower. The tower is still open with restaurants and observation decks and provides a breathtaking view of the city, mountains and surrounding areas.

Calgary has a wide spread of restaurants, cultural centres, theatres, art galleries and attractions including many buildings from the 1988 Winter Olympiad, the famous Saddledome where NHL team the Calgary Flames play as well as being within an hour or two of the major Canadian centres of skiing, where some of the best mountains in the world are located in Banff, Lake Louise, Canmore, Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer. Calgary is the second largest financial centre of Canada after Toronto with over 45 head offices located there and the home of The Canadian Venture Exchange, Calgary's stock exchange. Calgary is home to the world famed annual Calgary Stampede keeping up its cowboy roots.

Calgary has a vast amount of things to see and do and in add with Canada's second largest airport offers many direct flights and connections across the globe that will be great for study abroad programs. Calgary's close proximity to the major tourism centres of Alberta, as well as B.C, Vancouver and the American west coast including California where next year I will know two people attending college provides an ideal location in the middle of my family, friend and aqqaintance connections out west. I have long admired and held an interest in the city of Calgary and now may very well end up there on a trip this Spring and in college for 2 years.

SAIT

SAIT located downtown Calgary is my number one choice for college. It offers an amazing array of hospitality facilities including not only a student led formal restaurant as many do but also a student led nightclub, conference facilities, banquet centre, a series of snack bars, a deli and a cafe. The college participates in many highly respected culinary competitions and has a well awarded chef in the head position at the college. They participate in many prestigious culinary competitions around the world and have a strong support backbone and fantastic COOP placement programs. Its located in the centre of Calgary will allow me to continue living in Calgary but still be an open door to the expansive tourism industry of Alberta. They have extremely well run high rise residences and simply have so much to offer that I believe it's the perfect place for me. I'm applying for their 2 year Hotel and Restaurant Management program. I'm crossing my fingers for SAIT in Calgary!

Winnipeg skyline

Winnipeg, Manitoba
Winnipeg is a mid-scale city of 652,000 laid out across the start of the Canadian Praries in the low-lands of the country. Winnipeg is a major city for festivals, praciticulary light festivals for which it is known for. It also has a varied array of music including ballet, orchestras, opera and theatre. Winnipeg is a smaller scale but nontheless important business centre for Canada in the middle of highly important wheat growing countryside with a financial district. The city has many different parks and outdoor areas perfect for hikes, skiing and other recreational activities. It's home to the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Bluebombers that play against the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders.

Red River Community College
Red River offers a strong program with different options and possibilities within the program. Their staff seem to be highly competent and professionally friendly. Their program is extremely extensive and goes over many topics relating to hospitality. I am applying for both their Hospitality and Tourism Mangement & Hotel and Restaurant Management programs in Winnipeg.

St. Andrews, New Brunswick

The quaint town of St. Andrews

The city and capital of New Brunswick; Saint John

St.Andrews, New Brunswick (outside Saint John)
St. Andrews often called "St.Andrews by the sea" is a small town of 1,700 during the year with a sprouting population ranging up to 2,250 in the spring and summer months during peak tourist season. It's filled with many gorgeous historic homes, buildings and churches along the East Coast of Canada. It has lots of fishing with lobster traps laid out along its coast-line frontage. Many artists work and live in the town painting stunning Inuit and Maritime art pieces. The town has many boat cruises, seafood restaurants and attractions for visitiors and quaint old tyme shoppes. Different typical recreational activities include whale watching, scuba diving and snorkeling for fish and surrounding sealife. This would be a fantastic place for COOPs especially in the spring when the COOP placements are conducted. Its also close to the capital and larger city of Saint John and not so far off from the financial city of Moncton as well as in reasonably close proximity to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New England in the U.S.

New Brunswick Community College
N.B.C.C as its nicknamed is a mammoth college spanning many cities across New Brunswick yet maintains the small class feel and charm of all the other colleges I'm applying to across Canada. The hospitality programs in the well known of tourist town of St. Andrews have much to offer and offer a wide variation of their 2 year Hospitality and Tourism Management program that takes on three forms. This would allow me once applied to have several options to further research and ensure I have the perfect program for next year. It's ideal location for COOP in the town itself or nearby famed Bay of Fundy as well as the New Brunswick cities of Moncton and Saint John.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Charlottetown, a town of 35,000 of major historical significance in Canada's founding and constitutional history. This is where back in 1867 Canada became a country and was discussed, pondered over and created over several years and where the first constitution of Canada was written and its first laws were thought out. The town is the capital of Prince Edward Island, the smallest Canadian province with a large seafood and fishing industry along its many rich coastal areas. Tourists flock to the town especially in the warm weather months to take part in boat cruies, seafood feasts, its nightlife and more. Charlottetown is extremely scenic with potato fields in the famed red soil nearby. Many tourism oppurtunities await in the town and Island's many watering holes.

Holland College
Holland College offers a smaller scale cute yet cutting edge college on the magnificent shores of Prince Edward Island. They recently invested millions of dollars into brand new hospitality facilities on campus providing a high quality canvas in which to paint many pictures. The college also has strong support services and they are friendly folk. The college has many COOP cooperations across the Island and all over. I am applying for their 2 year Hotel and Restaurant program.
